And here we go, Page 2. Looks like our favorite Battle of the Bands is really starting to take a turn for the different here, huh?

So, some production notes. This was actually the first page I ever drew for Equestrian City. Waaaay back, this page had been commissioned out to another fella who, for one reason or another, decided I'd be much better suited at bringing this universe to life. So he sent me DarkMalcontent's contact info, DarkMalcontent sent me a single-page script, and I drew up a "test page" to sort of show the both of us what I'd be capable of. I was really kind of surprised when he got back to me and said, "Okay, so you want to make this the page?"

I think one of my favorite parts of this re-imagining is the slightly more threatening Siren forms. I remember the script called for a much more terrifying design, and I decided instead of starting from scratch, I'd take the designs already cooked up in the movies and -- using a technique I learned in high school art class, called "scales and spikes" -- monster-ed them up a little bit more, and I think they came out looking pretty intimidating. :D

See you guys in two weeks at the next page!

The Dazzlings are dressed of belly dancers?

Yep, that was the author's idea. I think he figured what better way to symbolize seduction through music and rhythms than with a gypsy design for the characters.

Absolutely spot on. I believe a majority of watchers can entirely understand why the Sirens weren't more revealing but..honestly should have been.

I also wanted to show immediately there were subtle differences in this world. :)

The less clothing they wear, the more powerful they become.

They are sirens, after all.

Wow! It looks really good, and I wouldn't be surprised if the sirens as they look right now is probably what DHX Media would have done if they weren't doing a Hasbro movie hehe

Like the new look. Definitely fits in with the "sex appeal" vibe the girl had going.

Thanks..origionally they were more skimpy in the first draft I wrote. It always seemed to me they needed more..or in this case less...;)

Did the original script also call for the Sirens to wear more revealing clothes? XD Not that I mind!

One of the first things I wanted to instill in the audience was a sense that "this looks familiar..but somethings off..".

Origionally I had sketched the idea out with them being in string bikinis or sort and their transformation scene had them sliding forward arms back chest forward on their knees as the power shot up from the necklaces.

The reasoning behind that and ultimately what happened was something that personally bugged me. Alot of the allure of a siren is the sensual look they have about them it contributes to the old tale of them crashing ships...cuz the sailors are so distracted by...several aspects of them ;)

I mean we got a audience full of high school age kida...for the most part high school is the age we discover sexuality and I wanted their outfits and overall dance and poses to reflect how capturing they really were.

I can only assume we didn't really go over the top because of the g rating the movie had but I figured it was something that could serve as a visual marker for eagle eyed viewers and a personal commentary on how some thought our Sirens should be dancing. :)

Hope this answers your question? :)

Wow writer commentary on a comic page that was fun more questions!

Actually, it did. Not sure I can remember the exact wording, but I believe the script called for "harem outfits," which I -- not really understanding what those would look like -- interpreted as a sort of "I Dream of Genie" getup. :P Not entirely clear on the motive behind the costume change, to be honest... outside of "it's different from Rainbow Rocks." You'd have to ask the author on that one; I didn't. :XD:

Hey, Wubs! (Can I call you Wubs? Haha) Yeah, with the horns specifically, i wanted to play off of each of the sirens' signature hairstyles. So Adagio's are curled up, Sonata's got the one horn for her one ponytail, and Aria's got the two for her two pigtails. ;P Hey, thanks for once again stopping by and dropping a comment. I'm glad you're enjoying the comic so far. :aww:
